I’ve recently become part of an art collectors group. We are called Art Twelve. I guess we are a little bit like a book club in that we catch up and enjoy a glass of wine and chat but our focus is on art and the acquisition of fabulous pieces that we share as a group.
Our first buying group hit the NZ Art Show (Wellington) in late July with the purpose of buying a piece or pieces of amazing art to kick off our collection.
Not only did they succeed beautifully but managed to persuade the artists to come and talk to us at our ‘reveal’ night.
We bought a beautiful bowl by ceramic artist Mia Hamilton http://artshow.co.nz/gallery/Mia+Hamilton and an ink and dry point piece by Lyndon Keene http://artshow.co.nz/gallery/Lyndon+Keene
The highlight for me was hearing the artists tell their story and explain their chosen artistic outlet and process.
Art groups are a great way to establish an eclectic collection. Our group selects three people as buyer group representatives each quarter and these people are tasked with purchasing art within the groups budget for the group. 12 people being involved at different times means that the collection is broad and diverse and has something for everyone. The benefit is having a new piece of art in your home every 12 weeks. Great for broadening the minds of those living in the home – adults and children alike.
