I had seen the most beautiful painting by an artist named Nadeesha Godamunne at a show opening at Artrium Gallery in Thorndon, Wellington a couple of weeks ago. I met the artist on the night and really connected with her over all things colour and design and as a result began obsessing over owning one of her works titled “Red Indian Girl”.
In our home we only own one painting by a New Zealand artist – other than my own work – so this was kind of a big decision. Whenever I see something I like my husband agrees that it is a wonderful work but that I could probably create one equally as wonderful. Hmmmm. Very kind of him and great to have my own personal cheerleader but that was not going to work this time!
I visited ‘my’ new piece three more times before taking the rest of my family in for a final viewing and to get their collective blessing and agreement that yes it is a super painting and yes we must own it.
The children were unmoved and thoroughly fed up at being dragged away from their new Nintendo Wii to buy a boring painting (their words – definitely not mine) and my husband also lacked the enthusiasm I had hoped for.
I can now understand the conflict of opinion that occurs when two or more people try to make a decision on buying one of my paintings. The learning is to deal directly with the person who has fallen in love with the piece as it’s speaking to them – and often only them….but to make sure that the credit card holder is nearby. I took my own advice on this vital element!
