I got some feedback a couple of weeks back, that I had invited, that didn’t sit so well and it’s taken me a while to process and deal with it.
I asked some clever artsy people for feedback on my work and their suggestions behind why I didn’t achieve an artistic goal that I had set for myself. (Crazy huh – it was only ever going to lead to heartbreak!).
The truth was hard to hear and it’s left me feeling a little raw and perhaps even a little bit humiliated.
The story goes that I had admired an artist for a while, even to the extent that you could call it an árt crush’, and my work had evolved into something that began to look very similar to this talented painter. I kept studying her work and thinking about how she had created such fantastic effects and textures – and ultimately that was my downfall.
It took two very brave people to spell it out for me and to give me advice on where to from here. Thanks so much Carla and Midge – your feedback and advice has not fallen on deaf ears. I have taken it all in, have mulled over, have let it sit and now I’m into an active learning phase – and I have you both to thank.
I’m finding it hard to create a new style and to develop new techniques and I do resort to what I know, so it may take a while before the new ‘me’ appears in my work but the marathon has begun. It’s not easy – in fact it’s so hard! But to progress I need to learn.
