After having my confidence knocked a few weeks back with a gallery declining to take my work (don’t lets get me started on this again!) I thought I’d go back to a place where my work has been exhibited before. This was a place where I had some success previously so I was working within my comfort level.
The location was an old haunt of mine. A rather lovely suburban Wellington café that does a great take away trim latte and even better date scones.
Doing the right thing I ordered my coffee and scone to go and mentioned very casually to the barista that I had some paintings that would look rather good on the empty picture hooks on the café walls. She looked a little uninterested so I continued chipping away. I went on to say that I had hung work in the cafe before and had experienced some success with their clientele. On hearing this she reached for the phone and called someone (?) to discuss my request. The call was ended and she told me that the café wall space was booked out until January 2011. OK – no problem – thanks for hearing me. (Although there are loads of empty walls and hooks at the moment!!)
Even though I can’t argue with this I did feel a little hard done by. Especially as it is my fav cafe.
My latte tasted a little bitter that day.
